Luxembourg has ordered one Caesar 155mm self-propelled howitzer for the Ukrainian military.

Sébastien Lecornu, Minister of the Armed Forces, announced this on his page.

“Luxembourg is contributing €5 million to the artillery coalition to finance Caesar purchases for Ukraine,” Lecornu said in his post.

The details of the tranche are not disclosed, but this amount fully corresponds to the current cost of one 6×6 Caesar self-propelled howitzer.

For a small European country with a population of 650,000 people, such a donation is a significant investment in Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022, Luxembourg has donated over a hundred armored vehicles and M113 tracked armored personnel carriers, as well as a large number of infantry weapons and ammunition.

Luxembourg has also joined the aviation coalition. The country’s contribution to this project is unknown, as it does not have fighter aircraft. However, it is possible that it will finance the purchase of ammunition and spare parts.

Artillery Coalition

To date, the artillery coalition, or rather the “Caesars Coalition,” has already received significant investments from a number of European countries. In total, Ukraine is to receive 78 French-made artillery systems.

All Caesars are scheduled to be manufactured by the end of 2024. In particular, France has already financed the production of twelve units, allocating €50 million. Ukraine has also joined in, paying for six more.

In addition, this March, the Danish government allocated an aid package worth $336 million, of which a certain amount will also go to this program. Another 6 howitzers were ordered by the Ukrainian government at its own expense.

In addition to orders for artillery from the French company Nexter, an alternative movement is brewing to finance the production of Ukrainian weapons by Western allies.

In particular, at the end of April, samples of Ukrainian weapons and, among other things, the Ukrainian 2S22 Bohdana self-propelled howitzer were presented to Danish MPs and the Minister of Defense.
