The Lithuanian Navy has taken delivery of a newly built tug, Lokio.

This was reported by the press service of the Lithuanian Navy.

The tug was constructed by the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group and tailored to meet the specific technical and operational requirements of the Lithuanian Navy.

This is a special event for Lithuania – Lokio became the first completely new ship to be accepted into the naval forces of independent Lithuania.

The Commander of the Lithuanian Navy, Admiral Giedrius Premeneckas, expressed hope for further strengthening of the fleet. In particular, through the purchase of new multi-purpose patrol vessels. He also noted the recent order of fast attack boats as another step forward.

The tug, ordered in August 2024 at a cost of €10.8 million, is a modified military version of Damen’s ASD 3010 model, a widely used port tug across Europe.

ASD 3010

The Damen ASD 3010 is a modern port tug known for its compact size and high maneuverability, enabled by azimuth thrusters.

The vessel is approximately 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, reaches speeds of up to 12–13 knots, and delivers a bollard pull of up to 60 tons, allowing it to handle large ships in confined port environments.

Broader Naval Development

The delivery of Lokio comes amid broader efforts to strengthen Lithuania’s maritime capabilities. On April 7, the defense ministries of Lithuania and Latvia signed a joint contract with Finland’s Marine Alutech Oy Ab to procure high-speed attack boats.

Lithuania’s share of the contract is valued at €22 million and includes two boats equipped with SPIKE NLOS anti-tank missiles and a remote-controlled weapon station featuring a heavy machine gun.

In January, Lithuania’s Western Baltic Engineering, in cooperation with foreign partners, began developing a new patrol ship project named Perkūnas.

The planned 88-meter vessel will feature a draft of 4.5 meters, optimized for operations both in shallow coastal areas and the open sea.
