Lithuania has announced plans to build a new military training ground near the Polish border, in the Kapčiamiestis area.
According to Polish Radio, the facility will be located in the heart of the Suwałki Corridor – a strategically critical land corridor between Russia’s Kaliningrad region and Belarus.
The planned training ground will cover approximately 14,600 hectares and will be able to host up to 4,000 troops at the same time. This capacity will allow for large-scale military exercises and coordinated training among different units.
The site will not be used solely by the Lithuanian Armed Forces. It is also expected to host training exercises for NATO forces, including troops from Poland and the United States.
The training ground’s location in the Suwałki Corridor is especially significant. This region is widely regarded as one of the most vulnerable areas in Europe’s defense system, as it serves as the only land link connecting the Baltic states with the rest of NATO.
As a reminder, we have previously published an article about another area of Lithuania considered vulnerable to potential Russian attacks – the Dieveniškės Salient.
