By 2027, Lithuania plans to complete the relocation of warehouses containing state reserves of food, fuel, and other goods from the border with Belarus to safer areas.
Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center (NKVC) announced this, according to LRT.
According to Aurimas Guščius, head of the agency’s planning bureau, 60% of the reserves previously stored in warehouses near the Belarusian border have already been moved to the central part of the country.
The final stage of removing stockpiles from “danger zones” will be completed after the construction of new infrastructure.
“Of course, construction and design processes take years, but 2027 marks the final stage of relocating stockpiles from danger zones,” he said.
Civil protection stockpiles, managed by the Fire and Rescue Service Department, will be housed at two new facilities in central and northern Lithuania.
One of the new warehouses, with an area of nearly 2,000 square meters, will be built near the airport in Šiauliai by summer 2027. A €2.3 million contract for its construction was signed in late February.
The location of the second facility, for which construction preparations are underway, has not been disclosed
The state reserve is intended for use in emergencies, mobilization, the declaration of a state of emergency, or war.
Between 2022 and 2025, Lithuania allocated €12.6 million for the accumulation and management of these resources. Data on the specific quantity, types, and storage locations of the reserves remain classified information.
Last year, soldiers from the Lithuanian Colonel Juozas Vitkus Engineering Battalion reinforced the border at a number of inactive checkpoints with Belarus and Russia using “dragon’s teeth.”
These measures are part of a long-term counter-mobility plan that reduces the ability of military equipment from these countries to physically enter Lithuania.
