Lithuania completes constructing the fence along the border with Belarus.
Ingrida Šimonytė, Prime Minister of Lithuania, announced the construction to be completed on August 29, Radio Svoboda writes.
The physical fence at the border is necessary to stem the inflow of illegal migrants.
The fences and barbed wire were put up at the ground sections of the border.
According to Šimonytė, the EPSO-G construction company involved in the construction of the 502-kilometer-long barbed-wire fence has notified the government that it has completed its work.
The rest of the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, which is over 100 kilometers long, goes through rivers and lakes.
The Prime Minister emphasized that by the end of the year, Lithuania should complete the installation of electronic surveillance systems abroad.
At the beginning of July 2021, Lithuania started installing barriers at its border with Belarus to stop the inflow of illegal migrants.
Last year, Lithuania observed a surge in migration from neighboring Belarus, prompting an immediate need for new engineered barriers at the border.
Lithuanian officials stated that the government of Belarus was behind the surge in illegal migration.
In August 2021, Ukraine shipped a batch of barbed wire to Lithuania to equip the border.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine agreed to provide humanitarian aid to Lithuania. Before that, the country called on its partners to provide the wire necessary to equip the border with Belarus.
