The drone that crashed in the Rezekne district of Latvia on September 7 turned out to be a Shahed kamikaze drone.
This was reported by the local TVNET media outlet with reference to the country’s defense ministry.
It is reported that the combat part of the drone was neutralized, and an investigation is underway.
Latvian defense officials stated that, based on available information, the drone’s entry into Latvia cannot be viewed as an open military escalation against the country, as Latvia was not its intended target.
Defense Minister Andris Spruds stated that Latvia is already strengthening air defense on its eastern border in response to the Russian drone entry.
The country’s armed forces tracked the drone’s flight and determined its crash site.
The Latvian Defense Ministry emphasized that the country’s security forces acted in accordance with established procedures, including informing NATO command.
Responsible officials, law enforcement agencies, and NATO countries in the region were informed of the incident.
On September 8, Militarnyi reported on the incident and suggested that the drone might be a Shahed.
On the night of September 6-7, a large group of drones entered Belarus, with one reaching the Hrodna region and flying as far as Korelichi and Novogrudok, heading toward the Lithuanian border.
It is possible that the Russian drone could have passed through Lithuanian airspace.
Recently, Militarnyi reported that neighboring Romania was investigating sites where a Russian Shahed drone, which flew in from Ukraine on the night of September 8, may have crashed.
