The Latvian government plans to transfer 42 armored personnel carriers to the Ukrainian Defense Forces, which corresponds to a battalion-size set.
ArmyInform reported on this, citing the words of Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds.
Sprūds stated this at the meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at NATO headquarters.
“We will be announcing new assistance in the form of 42 armored personnel carriers, which is the same number of armored vehicles for the battalion. We also continue to co-chair the Drone Coalition and participate in training the Ukrainian military,” Sprūds noted.
At the end of last year, the Latvian government announced the transfer of Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers to Ukraine, but their number was not disclosed.
It was announced that the first armored personnel carriers should arrive in Ukraine in 2025, but no timeline for completion of the delivery was given.
In early February, it was reported that the Ukrainian ambassador to Latvia was shown the production of the first batch of Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers intended for Ukraine.
It is reported that the production capacity of the Patria enterprise in Latvia allows the production of about 30 combat vehicles per year.
At the same time, the plant is busy fulfilling contracts for the Latvian Armed Forces.
Therefore, it is likely that the delivery of armored personnel carriers will be extended for several years, or Latvia will purchase APCs manufactured in other countries.
It is also quite possible that this number includes not only Patria 6×6, but also, for example, CVR vehicles.
It is worth reminding that Latvia is already transferring nine vehicles of this family to Ukraine.
