The Latvian government intends to significantly increase the number of volunteers in the National Guard by easing the entry criteria, according to a report by LSM.

Currently, the National Guard, which is part of Latvia’s National Armed Forces, has 10,000 members. The government has set an ambitious goal to double this number.

However, the plan is still in the conceptual phase, and the National Guard leadership is expected to present specific implementation measures within a month.

Defense Minister Andris Spruds explained that one of the key changes will be a more flexible approach to candidate selection.

Specializations, such as drone operators, engineers, and cybersecurity specialists, will no longer be hindered by medical restrictions.

“There is a very wide range, it is not necessary to be a fighter, it is not necessary to undergo a serious basic training course, but this basic training course can be shortened, there may be several ways to recruit,” the minister explained.
The minister emphasized that these simplified entry requirements will allow more volunteers to join and ensure they are equipped with the necessary skills for the country’s defense.

Development of the Latvian Army

In January, it was reported that the Latvian Ministry of Defense ordered 42 ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to strengthen the army with modern tracked armored vehicles.

The deal, worth €373 million, was launched in early 2023 with several potential suppliers being considered.

As part of NATO’s goals for enhancing combat capabilities, infantry fighting vehicles are a priority. The introduction of ASCOD IFVs will significantly strengthen Latvia’s combat potential. The Ministry of Defense announced the purchase in November 2024.
