The Kurdish opposition in Iran has postponed plans to invade the country amid statements by US President Donald Trump in support of a “peaceful” scenario for overthrowing the Ayatollah regime.

This was stated in an interview with CBS News by the leader of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan.

Trump recently said that, according to “reliable sources,” the killings in Iran are “stopping” and the authorities are allegedly not planning new executions after the brutal suppression of two weeks of mass protests.

According to him, the situation in the country shows signs of de-escalation.

These statements appear to be a departure from Washington’s previously harsher rhetoric. Earlier, the US president repeatedly warned of possible intervention to protect protesters, and on Tuesday even threatened “very harsh measures” in the event of executions of protesters in Iran.

The commander of the Iranian Kurds, Sairan Gharoli, noted that the wave of protests has given the opposition hope for the possible overthrow of the repressive regime that took hold after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

However, he said this would only be possible if the people taking to the streets received real international support.

Kurdish opposition leader Mustafa Hijri, who has been in exile for more than four decades, stressed that during this time, the Iranian authorities have repeatedly suppressed large-scale waves of popular protests.

Given that the current protests seem to be following the same pattern, he refrained from making any confident predictions about their outcome.

At the same time, Hijri openly expressed his hope for US intervention — in particular, targeted strikes on the infrastructure of the forces of repression that are firing on protesters, as well as on the so-called “judicial” institutions that serve the interests of the regime.

According to him, the strategic goal of the Kurdish opposition is to create conditions under which Kurds — about 10% of Iran’s population — as well as other ethnic minorities — can live under democratic laws.

This includes, in particular, the right to educate children in their native language and the official recognition of these rights by the state.
