Kamikaze drones have reportedly reached the city of Kovilkino in Mordovia, Russia.

This city is located more than 680 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, according to ASTRA.

On April 11, 2024, local authorities reported that two drones were shot down in Mordovia.

Both drones were shot down over military unit #84680 in the city of Kovilkino. The building, where the command post used to be, was damaged. No injuries were reported.

The 590th Separate Signals Intelligence/Electronic Warfare Unit, equipped with a ‘Container’ over-the-horizon radar, operates from this settlement.

The radar comprises two sites: one in Kovilkino and the other in Gorodok.

‘Container’ radar

The 29B6 ‘Container’ over-the-horizon radar is included in the system of reconnaissance and warning of aerospace attacks.

The Russians built the first of the ‘Container’ radars in Kovilkino, Mordovia, in 2000-2002.

The receiving part and the main hardware part of the radar (site No. 2) are located in this village.

The rest of the station with radiating antennas is placed at site No.1 near Gorodets settlement.

On December 2, 2013, the first ‘Container’ radar system entered pilot combat duty as part of the 590th Separate Radio Engineering Unit. This duty remains ongoing.

The receiving antenna system of the radar in Kovilkino consists of 144 antenna-feeder masts that are 34 meters high. It has a length of 1300 meters and a depth of 200 meters. The detection range of air targets exceeds 3000 km, and the inspection sector is 240 degrees.
