The Finnish Parliament’s defence committee recommended supporting Finland’s accession to NATO.

The committee’s conclusions say that joining the Alliance is the best solution for Finland to guarantee its national security.

“Finland is going to join NATO to maximize its security and protect the country. It is not directed against anyone,” the committee chairman Petteri Orpo said.

The committee’s opinion states that it does not have any cautions about applying for membership.

The report of the Defense Committee has been discussed in recent weeks in eleven committees of the Finnish Parliament. This is not the final position on Finland’s membership in NATO, but it allows proceeding with debates among parliamentarians.

Before making the decision, the defense committee was consulting with dozens of experts.

All other committees will also submit their conclusions to the Foreign Affairs Committee, which will prepare the final report.

On 12 May, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto is expected to announce his position on NATO membership.

Upon it, parliamentary groups will approve the application, the text of which has already been written.

Finland and Sweden are expected to apply for NATO membership during the June NATO summit in Madrid.
