A video capturing the moment of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida being rescued from an assassination attempt was published on social media.
Kishida’s bodyguard deflected an explosive device that was thrown in the direction of the Prime Minister.
The released footage captured a security guard spotting an object flying towards Fumio Kishida, knocking it away with a briefcase, and kicking it.
After that, he opens the briefcase, which serves as a portable ballistic shield, covers the Prime Minister with it, and takes him aside.
A few seconds later, the device exploded, followed by smoke. It was immediately assumed that it was a smoke bomb thrown from the crowd.
The incident happened on April 15, preceeding Fumio Kishida’s speech in the fishing port of the city of Wakayama as part of an election tour.
Immediately after the explosion, the Prime Minister of Japan left the site by car. According to Kyodo News, one policeman received minor injuries as a result of the incident.
The police detained a 24-year-old man who threw the device. According to eyewitnesses, he was holding a silver cylinder and making a motion with his hand resembling lighting a lighter before the incident.

Civilians assisted in detaining him. The man was holding another object in his hands. He reportedly had two devices with him and was only 10 meters away from the Prime Minister when he threw the first one.
According to the police, the detainee refused to answer questions without a lawyer present. The law enforcement officers are currently investigating the motives of his act.
The journalists also published a photo of the device. It is a metallic-colored cylindrical object that is likely self-made.
Although Japan is an anti-gun country, people who plan to commit crimes create weapons from improvised materials.
In July of last year, an attempt was made on the life of Shinzō Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan. The incident happened during his campaign speech in the city of Nara.
Police arrested 41-year-old Tetsui Yamagami after he shot Shinzō Abe twice.
Photos from the crime scene revealed that the weapon used in the murder attempt was homemade.
