Japan plans to join the NATO-led PURL initiative to supply Ukraine with U.S.-made weapons and equipment.
NHK reported this, citing its own sources.
According to NATO officials, Japan will provide funding solely for defensive, non-lethal equipment.
In particular, this concerns possible deliveries of radar systems and body armor.
Japan has already held briefings on this plan for several NATO members and Ukraine. One Alliance official emphasized that even non-lethal equipment is critically important, and that Japan’s involvement in the initiative is a significant development.
NATO and the United States established the PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) in July 2025.
The mechanism is designed to coordinate the procurement and delivery of U.S.-manufactured weapons and ammunition to meet Ukraine’s needs.
