Japan is modernizing its Type 10 tanks by installing an active protection system and a 30mm gun.

This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Japan in a defense procurement document.

As part of the announced modernization of the Type 10 tank fleet, which was announced on June 28, 2024, the Ministry of Defense has formed certain specific technical tasks and stages of tank modernization.

For example, it was decided to improve the tank’s protection against modern threats, including anti-tank weapons and drones, including FPV and ammunition drop systems.

Currently, the Ministry of Defense of Japan distinguishes three separate active defense systems, namely: Rafael Trophy, Rheinmetall Strike Shield and Elbit Iron Fist.

These systems meet the conditions set by the military department of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces, in particular:

• protection of the upper hemisphere;
• 360° area of interception of threats;
• 4 ready-to-use charges;
• total weight not exceeding 1000 kg.

In addition, it was decided to conduct comprehensive tests of the Kongsberg RS6 remote-controlled module with a 30 mm gun.

It is noted that the RWS (remote weapon system) had to be integrated into the active defense system and to use antenna modules to detect UAVs.

Currently, the total number of tanks to be modernized is unknown, but it is expected to purchase 300 Kongsberg RS6 modules, which will be produced in Japan at a rate of 10 units per year.

In addition, Japan continues to produce Type 10 tanks and plans to produce a total of about 300 tanks of this type. As of today, the Ministry of Defense of Japan has ordered 12 tanks as part of its 2025 order, bringing the total number of these vehicles to 148.

In addition, the Logistics and Procurement Agency is considering the development of additional protection modules to be used on Type 10 tanks. As the tank was designed with a focus on modularity, additional modules can be installed from the factory.

Earlier, Militarnyi reported that new Patria armored personnel carriers for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces would be produced at a new plant on Hokkaido Island.
