Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi mentioned that the decision to support Ukraine had received almost unanimous support in parliament.
Militarnyi informs about it.
Despite the fact that there are forces in the country that question the decision to support Ukraine, the position of the authorities is unequivocal.
This was the statement that Draghi made in an interview with Corriere della Sera, European Pravda reports.
“The terms of the issue are clear: on the one side, there are people who have been attacked, on the other one – an aggressor army. What is the best way to help the attacked? Sanctions were essential but they were not sufficient enough to halt Russia’s troops in the short term. This would require direct assistance to Ukrainians (with weapons) – and this is what we are doing,” Draghi said.
He also noted that ignoring providing assistance to Ukraine is like accepting slavery and subjugation. This goes in contrary to European values.
“We want to help Ukrainians protect themselves,” Draghi added.
The EU has allocated EUR 1.5 billion as military assistance to Ukraine. This money will come from the European Peacekeeping Fund. The decision was supported by all the EU member states.
The latest €500 million aid package was approved on April 13th.
These funds will be used both for the supply of weapons and for the supply of personal protective equipment, first aid kits, and fuel for the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
As reported earlier, Russia is trying to threaten EU member states that are providing assistance to Ukraine. Thus, a note of protest was sent to the Czech government. Yet they refused to even consider this issue and called such claims coming from the Russians nonsense.
