Germany has made an official statement committing to handing over the IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine.
This was announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his speech in the Bundestag, DW reports.
Prior to that, the German media were already making reports on the possibility of transferring the advanced IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine.
IRIS-T SLM is a medium-range air defense missile system. It is based on the IRIS-T SL – a modification of the ground-based missiles that were used in addition to American PAC-3 missiles.
The German leader stated that with the help of these systems, Ukraine will be in a position “to protect an entire major city from Russian air attacks.”
In addition, Germany has vowed to transfer to Ukraine the tracking radar which is capable of detecting enemy howitzers, mortars, and rocket artillery.
In addition, Scholz said Berlin would send multiple rocket launchers to Ukraine in close coordination with the USA. These systems would not be able to hit targets on the Russian territory.
As previously reported, on Tuesday, May 31, President Joe Biden announced that the United States would be providing Ukraine with advanced missile systems and ammunition so that the Ukrainian military could “make more precise strikes on key targets on the battlefield.”
