Iranian Shahed-type strike drones struck an airport in Azerbaijan.
An eyewitness named Hamid posted a video of the strike on X.
According to him, the drone reached an airport in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
In the published video, the distinctive sound of the MD550 engine can be heard, resembling the buzz of a ‘moped.’
After the strike, a powerful explosion was heard on the airport grounds. Later, it was reported that at least two drones hit Nakhchivan Airport.
The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an Azerbaijani exclave bordering Iran, Turkey, and Armenia, and it holds a strategically important position in the South Caucasus.
The day before the attack, Azerbaijan put its army on high alert and deployed troops on the border with Iran.
The Azerbaijani authorities have officially confirmed the attack on the airport from Iran.
“Around noon on March 5, an attack was carried out with drones from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan,” the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
One drone crashed into the airport terminal in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, while another fell near a school building in the village of Shakrabad.
As a result of the strikes, the airport building was damaged, and two civilians were injured.
“This attack on the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan is a violation of the norms and principles of international law and contributes to increasing tensions in the region,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
Azerbaijan demands that the Islamic Republic of Iran provide a clear explanation of the incident as soon as possible, conduct an appropriate investigation, and take the necessary urgent measures to prevent similar attacks from occurring in the future.
“The Azerbaijani side reserves the right to take appropriate response measures,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.
