Iran has struck an Italian military base in Erbil, in northeastern Iraq, with a missile.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reported this.
The strike took place on the night of Thursday, March 12. Currently, it is known that none of the military personnel were injured.
“Fortunately, our soldiers are fine and were safe in the bunker. I express my solidarity with them and gratitude for their daily service,” Tajani said.
At the same time, the Italian Ministry of Defense reported that about 300 soldiers are currently stationed at Camp Singara in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan. They are engaged in training Kurdish security forces.
The type of missile used by the Iranians to attack the Italian base has not been specified. A ballistic missile was likely used.
A similar situation occurred on the night of March 10, when a German field camp at Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan was also fired upon by Iranians with ballistic missiles.
The military personnel took shelter in time, which prevented any casualties.
The Jordanian base also hosts units of the US Air Force, whose air defense systems protect the facility.
Germany has maintained a contingent at Al-Azraq for several years as part of the international anti-terrorism coalition. The main task of the units is to support operations with refueling aircraft.
It should be recalled that in early March, the Persian Gulf countries appealed to Italy to transfer air defense systems, in particular SAMP/T, to protect against Iranian strikes.
In addition, these countries are seeking to acquire anti-drone systems urgently.
