An Iranian drone carried out a strike on the British RAF Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus. The explosion caused minor damage to the airfield, but no service members were injured.
The news outlet Cyprus Mail reported the incident, citing its own sources as well as official statements from the UK government.
The attack took place around midnight, shortly after the base had been placed on heightened alert. Preliminary reports suggest the drone used was a Shahed-136 loitering munition, a type previously deployed in attacks against Israel and Ukraine.
Currently, a Royal Air Force Airbus KC2 Voyager is patrolling over Cyprus to monitor the airspace.
It is worth noting that RAF Akrotiri officially holds the status of sovereign British territory. Since the United Kingdom is a member of the Alliance, the base is also considered NATO territory.
It is worth recalling that the UK plans to engage Ukrainian specialists to assist in intercepting drones in the Middle East.
“We will also bring in experts from Ukraine alongside our own specialists to help partners in the Gulf shoot down Iranian drones that are attacking them,” the head of the British government emphasized.
