Iran Armed its Border Guard Units with Russian Spartak Armored Vehicles

Iran has demonstrated Russian Spartak armored vehicles during a ceremony to hand over the equipment to border guard units.

During the transfer of new equipment to the border guard units of the law enforcement forces, the centerpiece was the Russian Spartak MRAP armored vehicles, which were officially demonstrated for the first time as part of the Iranian forces.

“The Spartak is a Russian MRAP armored vehicle with a high level of protection against mines, explosive devices and ambushes. The transfer of these vehicles to Iranian border guards was the first confirmation of their sale to Iran.

The Russian Spartak is expected to enhance the protection of personnel during operations in high-risk areas, which are now quite common, especially on the Iranian-Afghan border.

Technical characteristics:

  • Gross weight: approx. 14,500 kg (14.5 tons) in the base version
  • Dimensions: Length: approx. 6,500 mm; Width: 2 550 mm; Height: 2 800 mm
  • Engine: turbo diesel with an output of approx. 312 hp (230 kW)
  • Top speed: approx. 100 km/h
  • Range: approximately up to 1,000 km
  • Ballistic protection: The hull provides resistance against 12.7 mm armor-piercing bullets, which corresponds to STANAG Level III (equivalent to Level 3a/3b) in the basic configuration.
