The Permanent Mission of Iran to the UN announced the completion of a contract with Russia to purchase Russian Su-35 fighter jets.
Information on this was published by IRIB, the Iranian state media.
It is noted that the Permanent Mission of Iran announced that Russian aircraft are technically acceptable to Iran.
The contract to purchase the Su-35s was finalized after Iran’s arms purchase restrictions ended in October 2020 (UN resolution 2231).
The value of the contract and the number of fighter jets were not disclosed.
Russia, for its part, has not commented on this statement.
In January 2023, Shahryar Heydari, a member of the Iranian Parliamentary Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy, confirmed the existence of an agreement to purchase Russian fighter jets.
He claimed that the aircraft would be delivered to the country at the beginning of the new year according to the Iranian calendar, i.e. after March 21.
At the end of December 2022, Western intelligence reported that Russia was going to transfer 24 Su-35 fighter jets to Iran in exchange for “kamikaze drones.”
The Commander of the Iranian Air Force reported that the previously planned purchase of Russian Su-30 fighter jets has now given way to plans to purchase Su-35S fighter jets.
Previously, SkyNews journalists published information that in January, Iran supplied ammunition for small arms and artillery to Russia. This included millions of cartridges and hundreds of thousands of shells delivered by cargo ships through the Caspian Sea.
At the same time, Western analysts believe that Russia is hesitant to purchase Iranian ballistic missiles. This is due to Russian fears that the United States will provide Ukraine with ATACMS missiles.
