The iPhone and iPad are the first and only consumer devices in the world that officially meet NATO countries’ information security requirements.

After a series of tests and evaluations by the German government, these gadgets have been approved for use in environments with NATO Restricted access levels. There is also a higher level, NATO Secret, so these devices cannot yet be considered encryption device for processing information and communications at the highest level.

Importantly, iPhone and iPad running iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 can handle classified information without requiring any additional specialized software or changes to their factory settings.

Among the key technologies that enabled the certification are advanced data encryption, Face ID biometric authentication, and the innovative Memory Integrity Enforcement feature, which protects the integrity of the device’s memory.

Ivan Krstić, Apple’s Vice President of Security Engineering and Architecture, noted that in the past, devices with this level of protection were available only to a limited number of government organizations.

The company has changed this approach by creating a secure device available to every user, with its protection now officially recognized by top-level international institutions.

This paves the way for the digital transformation of public sectors within the Alliance.
