Indonesia’s national police will receive new armored vehicles from the Republic of Korea.

Barracuda vehicles are designated to be delivered to the island country of Southeast Asia.

Last month, South Korean defense enterprise Hanwha Corp. signed a contract to supply 25 armored vehicles by 2024.

The company signed the deal with the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia on June 15, following an international bidding process to procure the multi-role Barracuda vehicles.

The defense enterprise Hanwha Corp. did not disclose the value of the contract to supply Barracuda armored vehicles.

Within this deal, Hanwha Defense, an affiliate of Hanwha Corp., will manufacture and deliver these vehicles.

According to the media, it would mark the second export of the Barracuda vehicles to Indonesia since 2004, when a contract was signed to provide a batch of 20 vehicles to the Indonesian Police.

The Barracuda is a tactical armored vehicle designed to implement various tasks. It is an improved version of the German TM-170 armored personnel carrier, which was once produced under license in South Korea for police use.

The armored vehicle was in the limited amount in service by the overseas peacekeeping units of the Republic of Korea Army. They were used in Iraq and Lebanon and applied by the police in Indonesia and Vietnam.

The vehicle crew consists of two people, and up to 13 paratroopers can also be accommodated in the body. The standard armament of this vehicle includes a 7.62-mm machine gun mounted in a small turret or a rotating turret. Paratroopers can also fire on the move using loopholes with bulletproof windows.

In its basic modification, the vehicle weighs 11.7 tons and develops a maximum speed of up to 100 km/h on the highway, with a range of 1000 km.
