In India, a new drone called AVATAAR has been developed that can operate both in the air and underwater using sonar.
According to AquaAirX Autonomous Systems, the drone is built with a carbon-fiber structure.
This material is highly resistant to corrosion. The drone is also coated with special protective materials that shield its sensors from harsh marine conditions.
The device is equipped with an acoustic communication modem for reliable underwater communication and an Ultra-Short Baseline navigation system that ensures precise positioning.
AVATAAR is also fitted with a multibeam imaging sonar.
The sonar allows for detailed mapping of the seabed. In addition, it has integrated LED lights that improve visibility in low-light conditions.
“Such innovations demonstrate how Indian startups are increasingly moving beyond consumer technologies into the fields of deep tech, robotics, and defense innovation,” the company said.
The name AVATAAR stands for Amphibious Vehicle for Autonomous Tactical Aerial & Aquatic Reconnaissance.
It can be used for multi-domain surveillance and threat detection in ports, harbors, and coastal approaches.
The device also supports tactical reconnaissance, surveillance, and intelligence operations, transmitting data in real time in coastal and near-shore areas.
After each underwater mission, AVATAAR must be rinsed with fresh water to remove salt deposits. This helps maintain the drone’s durability and performance during repeated use.
Underwater drones are also being developed in Ukraine. In particular, Ukrainian engineers have developed the Toloka drone.
