An F-35 from the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base in Utah crashed at the end of the runway.

The accident happened on Wednesday around 6:15 p.m. local time. The 388th Fighter Wing officials confirmed the crash, stating that it happened at the north end of the runway.

This was announced on the official Twitter account of the 388th Fighter Wing.

They identified the aircraft to be an F-35A Lightning II.

“Emergency crews both on and off base responded immediately,” officials said.

As later shared by the unit’s representative, the pilot ejected and was taken to a local medical center for observation. The cause of the accident is unknown and will be investigated.

Details about any pilot injuries and their severity are not available. The pilot identities were also not released.

Base officials claim that they were still working to determine the cause of the crash, but thanked the pilot for taking the plane away from populated areas.

“Flying military aircraft is a risky business that we all accept when we go do it. Foremost, we’re thankful that he’s okay; he got out of the aircraft. We’re thankful that nobody on the ground was injured,” said Col. Craig Andrle, commander of the 388th Fighter Wing.

Hill Air Force Base is the largest location of F-35 aircraft in the United States. The facility is used for weapons evaluation, training, and testing activities involving other types of aircraft. It is also a large logistics depot for the conversion and modernization of many types of aircraft that are in service with the Pentagon, as well as performing a number of other important functions for the U.S. Air Force.

The fire caused by the crash has been extinguished, and the search for dangerous substances is currently underway. The F-35 has a large number of toxic materials that can be hazardous when burned, including the radar-absorbing coating on its fuselage. Any plane wreckage scattered as a result of the crash may be classified due to its technology, so must be collected as well.

The F-35 Lightning II multipurpose fighter is a 5th generation combat aircraft developed by the American Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company. The aircraft can conduct air combat, bombing, and close support missions. The combat aircraft in the F-35A version is a model with conventional take-off and landing at airfields.
