Ukraine began an investigation into the shooting by invaders of Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered near Bakhmut.
This was announced by the Office of the Attorney General of Ukraine.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Russians committed another war crime, allegedly, on Saturday, February 24, in the Donetsk region.
The corresponding video was shared on the Internet on February 25, 2024.
It is noted that the footage recorded how Russian invaders during the assault on Ukrainian positions between the villages of Ivanivske and Khromove, Donetsk region, shoot a group of captured Ukrainian servicemen.
The exact number of Ukrainians executed by Russians is unknown, there were probably at least seven of them. These are servicemen of Defense Forces of Ukraine.
“The drone camera footage shows that representatives of Russian Armed Forces first ordered Ukrainian defenders to leave the trench. After gathering all defenders in one place and leaving several meters, the enemy releases a submachine gun burst at them. The military of the aggressor state deliberately finished off the wounded and unarmed Ukrainian soldiers, ignoring the norms of international humanitarian law,” the Office of the Prosecutor General said in a statement.
Dmytro Lubinets , Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the video showed how the Ukrainian military had surrendered: “Their hands were raised to the top, they showed that they were unarmed and did not pose a threat. The Russian military had to take them prisoner, but instead shot.”
The Ombudsman noted that he would send official letters to the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross so that organizations record and publicly recognize that the Russian military kills Ukrainian prisoners of war.
The Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that law enforcement officers began an investigation into the violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder.
Pre-trial investigation is carried out by the investigative departments of the SSU in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
In total, 19 criminal proceedings on the murder of 45 Ukrainian prisoners of war are currently being investigated in Ukraine.
