Poland is developing its own solid rocket booster, which could be used in 300mm missiles.

The engine layout was demonstrated at this year’s MSPO2022 arms exhibition.

The developers claim that tests had already confirmed the expected characteristics of the engine.

“To be able to test this engine, WITU had to build a special stand because Poland has no suitable laboratory to test the drives of such power,” said Dariusz Sokołowski, a representative of the development organization (Wojskowy Instytut Techniczny Uzbrojenia).

The engine length is 1.79 m, and the weight is 48 kg without fuel and 148 kg with fuel. Thrust – 39,500 Newtons, impulse – 251,000 Newtons per second.

The development of the engine for civilian purposes at the expense of the European Union was launched in 2020. It was initially intended as an element of a three-stage SRB for a small rocket, which could put a research payload into orbit at an altitude of 100 km.

However, the creators are convinced that a ballistic missile for the military could be developed on the basis of the engine:

“If we build an engine of four segments, add an aerodynamic rudder and a 200-kilogram warhead, we will have a ready-made surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of approximately 150 km.”

The engine could also be used for a medium-range anti-aircraft missile.

The civilian rocket equipped with this Polish engine is due to make its first test flight in May 2023.
