Ukrainian artillerymen have successfully hit Russian Nona-S self-propelled mortars in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Ukrainian Special Operations Forces said that mortars had been discovered by a reconnaissance drone operator.
“During reconnaissance operations in the Zaporizhzhia sector, operators of one of SOF units discovered two self-propelled mortars,” SOF said.
Then, SOF operators directed the fire of the US M142 HIMARS rocket system of the Ukrainian Defense Forces at Russian targets.
“Thanks to precise adjustments, both self-propelled mortars have been destroyed by the artillery fire,” the military noted.
Mortars had been discovered near the village of Novomykhailivka in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Russians did not expect that this position would be discovered by Ukrainian reconnaissance drones.
Presumably, Russian 2S9 Nona-S self-propelled mortars were stationed at a field refuelling and ammunition loading point, or a repair team was working there.
The destroyed self-propelled mortars were designed to close fire support airborne units on the battlefield.
The main weapon of the system is a 120mm gun-mortar.
Russians usually use them in pairs. This tactic is confirmed by the destruction of these mortars in pairs.
As previously reported, in September of last year, the Ukrainian HIMARS rocket system destroyed two Russian 2S9 Nona-S self-propelled mortars in the Donetsk region. Also, in April, near Bakhmut, the Ukrainian military destroyed two 2S9 Nonas self-propelled mortars belonging to Russian invaders.
