The first stage of the return of wounded and seriously ill servicemen of the Ukrainian Defense Forces from Russian captivity has taken place.
This was informed by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
It is reported that this exchange took place within the framework of the agreements reached in Istanbul.
“They all need immediate medical care. This is an important humanitarian act.”, the president said.
Among the returned defenders are representatives of the Navy, Army, Air Force, TDF, USF, Border Guard, National Guard, and State Special Transport Service.
Among the liberated defenders are the defenders of Mariupol, who spent more than 3 years in captivity. In addition to soldiers and non-commissioned officers, officers were also released.
The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War detailed that all of the released soldiers have serious injuries and serious illnesses: amputated limbs, vision problems, abscesses, infections, trauma, shrapnel wounds and chronic diseases.
Some of the liberated soldiers were diagnosed with hepatitis and tuberculosis.
The returned defenders will be taken to medical centers to undergo all necessary examinations and sent for further treatment and medical rehabilitation.
All those released will be provided with the necessary assistance, their documents will be restored and they will be paid the appropriate financial support for their stay in captivity.
For security reasons, the exact number of people released will be announced after the exchange is completed.
Earlier, on June 9, Ukraine returned the first group of military men under the age of 25 from Russian captivity.
