Germany will promptly supply 64 more anti-aircraft missiles for Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this on the second day of the meeting of the heads of defense departments of NATO countries in Brussels.

Pistorius noted: this decision is important to ensure the support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces at the current stage. The missiles must be delivered immediately.

“This is a very important sign of sustained support for the successful air defense efforts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, especially now, at this particular stage of the war,” Pistorius said.

It is reported that the German Armed Forces have PAC-2 and PAC-3 versions of the Patriot anti-aircraft systems. The ammunition of the latter includes M91 interceptors, guaranteed to shoot down ballistic missiles.

Recently, the United States, the UK, Denmark, and the Netherlands also announced their intention to provide hundreds of additional anti-aircraft missiles to support Ukraine’s counteroffensive. Their delivery has already started and should be completed within the next few weeks.

The two air defense systems handed over to Ukraine are performing the task of covering strategic objects. It is reported that the battery supplied by the United States covers the capital from numerous missile attacks of the Russian Federation, but the activity of the “German” battery remains undisclosed.

Last month, CNN, citing its own sources, reported that Ukrainian air defense used the Patriot SAM to shoot down a Russian warplane.

Unnamed Pentagon officials and congressional staffers reported that in recent weeks, Ukrainian troops had used the US-made Patriot air defense system to shoot down at least one faraway Russian fighter jet.

According to CNN, other air defense systems in Ukraine did not have a sufficient range to do this.

Officials shared that the Russian warplanes targeted by the Patriot had been on a bombing run to fire missiles against Ukrainian targets, in particular, to strike civilian targets, which Russia had been doing throughout the past year.

Considering the technical capabilities of the system to shoot down maneuverable targets and the distance from Kyiv to the state border, the system transferred by the United States could not have performed this operation. Therefore, it can be assumed that it was the German battery that was used for this.
