The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) is an international organization that deals with issues of missing persons as a result of armed conflicts, human rights violations, disasters, organized crime, illegal migration and other reasons.
ICMP is involved in the development of legislation to protect the families of the disappeared, as well as in the development of institutions, the formation of community associations and the development of technical expertise in the search and identification of missing persons.
The commission manages the world’s largest human DNA identification center. To date, ICMP has identified more than 20,000 missing people from around the world.
ICMP also conducts training and educational programs for representatives of government agencies, law enforcement officers, non-governmental organizations, families of missing persons and forensic experts.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine urged not to release photos featuring missing persons or prisoners on social networks. Especially in military uniform and with personal data.
“The specified person may indeed be in captivity, but the enemy considers him a civilian. Or a person can simply hide in the temporarily occupied territories and look for an opportunity to return. By making public the data and photo of such a person, you give the enemy a reference point for searches,” Hanna Maliar, Deputy Minister of Defense noted.
She also reported that as of November 2, about 7,000 people are considered missing in Ukraine.
As previously reported, BBC journalists released satellite images from the village of Staryi Krym near Mariupol, where an increase in the number of burials was recorded.
