Germany has announced it will deploy around 12 troops to Greenland.
The deployment will be part of an intelligence mission to be carried out by European countries on the island from January 15 to 17, according to DW, citing Germany’s Ministry of Defense.
Norway and Sweden will also participate in the operation. Oslo will deploy two service members to strengthen cooperation within NATO, Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik told Reuters.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated on X that several Swedish officers will arrive in Greenland before January 15. Some personnel from the Swedish Armed Forces have already arrived on the island today.
According to the Swedish side, the officers are part of a group from several allied countries and are preparing the next stages of the Danish exercise Operation Arctic Endurance. Sweden deployed its military personnel at Denmark’s request.
Previously, Patrick Sensburg, head of the German Reservists’ Association, called for the deployment of a European brigade in Greenland.
He stated that Europe must demonstrate a serious presence in the region, given the intentions of U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the strategically important Arctic island.
