Germany’s armed forces intend to spend more than €20 billion on ammunition procurement over the long term, according to Hartpunkt, citing the draft federal budget.
The Bundeswehr plans to allocate €4.705 billion for ammunition in 2025 alone. By comparison, in the previous fiscal year, €3.075 billion came from the Bundeswehr’s special fund, with an additional €509 million from the regular defense budget.
The plan outlines a long-term procurement strategy stretching to 2037. Between 2026 and 2037, €17.336 billion is earmarked to provide ammunition suppliers with greater certainty for production planning.
The largest annual commitment is scheduled for 2028 at €2.93 billion, followed by €2.462 billion in 2029.
The draft budget does not specify the types or quantities of ammunition to be procured.
It also remains unclear whether the figures include missile purchases for systems such as the Arrow 3 or the IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, or if those items fall under separate ground-based air defense budget lines.
