The German Ministry of Defense orders additional Patriot air defense systems.
The Raytheon company announced this.
As part of the signed contract worth $1.2 billion, Germany will receive additional launchers and radars of the air defense system.
The additional systems will allow Germany to supplement its existing fleet of air defense systems and replace those systems that were transferred to Ukraine.
The scope of the contract includes the most current Patriot Configuration 3+ radars, launchers, command and control stations, associated spares, and support.
“Patriot remains the tried-and-true stalwart of air and missile defense, relied upon by our global customers to deter aggression and defend their interests,” said Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon.
Patriot systems are the most massive systems capable of hitting both ballistic and air targets.
Among European countries, the Patriot air defense systems are in service with Spain, Romania, Sweden, Poland, Greece, the Netherlands, and Ukraine.
In addition, the system has demonstrated its high efficiency in intercepting Russian ballistic, cruise, and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.
Militarnyi previously reported that the NATO member states had committed to providing Ukraine with new air defense systems.
U.S. President Joe Biden, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi signed the statement.
