German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius admits the possibility of sending German peacekeepers to Ukraine to create a secure environment.

European Pravda reported on this with reference to the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

During a conversation with journalists, answering a question about the possible deployment of German troops in the buffer zone between Ukraine and Russia, Pistorius noted that the discussion of this initiative will become relevant when the time comes.

The Minister also emphasized that Germany, as NATO’s largest partner in Europe, will play an important role and bear responsibility in international cooperation.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that the key objective of the deployment of NATO forces in Ukraine is to create a security environment that would prevent Russia from attacking Ukraine again in the future.

The Minister is currently planning a visit to the United States to meet with President-elect Donald Trump and discuss further steps.

“The candidate for the US Secretary of Defense post has not yet been approved. However, we are interested in a quick meeting and exchange of views in Washington in early February,” Pistorius added.

French President Emmanuel Macron was the first to discuss the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine. In January 2024, he said in an interview with The Economist that he did not rule out such a scenario. At the same time, he emphasized that he would not disclose all the details of his plans, as this could affect France’s security.

A month later, in February 2024, he reiterated his position and emphasized that France was ready to send a contingent of the French army to resolve the conflict at any time.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crozetto also raised the possibility of sending peacekeepers to Ukraine during a meeting with colleagues from European and North African countries in Madrid.

Crozetto emphasized that Italy has many years of experience in peacekeeping missions around the world, particularly in regions such as Gaza and Lebanon, where there is always a risk of clashes between UN forces and local militants.

However, despite the readiness of some ministers, the governments of France and Italy are currently refraining from actively supporting this idea. Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, believes that the discussion of sending peacekeepers is premature. In his opinion, Ukraine’s top priority remains achieving a just peace, which includes restoring the country’s territorial integrity.
