German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany is negotiating with Greece on the transfer of armored vehicles to Ukraine.

This was stated by Scholz, who spoke at a briefing in Brussels, according to European Pravda.

The essence of the agreement is that Germany will provide Greece with its BMPs to replace those that the Greek government will hand over to Ukraine.

“Today I spoke with the Prime Minister of Greece, and we agreed on a similar agreement with the Greek side: we will transfer them German infantry fighting vehicles as replacement. The details of this agreement will be discussed by the defense ministers,” Olaf Scholz said.

He added that Germany plans to continue providing weapons to Ukraine, which also includes providing weapons replacement to other allies who transfer their equipment to the Ukrainian army.

This was with regards to the Soviet-era armored personnel carriers, according to Reuters.

What amount of equipment is discussed, both from Greece and from Germany, is not specified.

Greek BMP-1

It is known that in the early 1990s, Greece received from Germany about 500 BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles, which were previously used by the army of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and after the unification of the countries were of no use for the Bundeswehr.

All vehicles were of Czechoslovak production, and underwent local modification, as a result of which it received the BMP-1A1 Ost index. That upgrade included:

• dismantling of the launcher of the 9M14 Malyutka anti-tank missile
• installation of a new radio station
• replacement of asbestos elements in vehicle units with similar ones from harmless elements
• exterior lighting in accordance with NATO standards (position lights, turns, etc.)
• rear-view mirrors, additional handles and a ladder for safe landing of the crew on the hull
• installation of Leitkreuz (guide cross for orientation of the crown when driving at night with the lights off

Greek BMP-1 in addition to the basic set of weapons is equipped with a Browning M2 50 caliber machine gun (12.7 mm), mounted on special turrets on the top.

Also part of the Greek BMP-1 had turret dismantled and replaced by the ZU-23 (ZU-23-2) 23-mm anti-aircraft twin-barreled autocannon.

In August 2019, 92 Greek BMP-1 were received by Egypt, it is also known about the transfer of 100 such vehicles to Iraq.

As previously reported, Germany is also in talks with Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia on the replacement of weapons handed over to Ukraine.
