The German Army has received its first batch of GL 40 underbarrel grenade launchers from the Austrian company Steyr Arms.
This weapon is intended to replace the AG36 models manufactured by Heckler & Koch, which were previously used by special forces units, according to Soldat & Technik.
The supply contract was signed about a year ago after Steyr Arms won the tender. The framework agreement provides for the delivery of up to 4,476 units of weaponry.
The new grenade launchers will be integrated with the Bundeswehr’s new standard-issue G95 rifle, though their design allows them to be mounted on G36 rifles or used as standalone weapons.
The 180-mm-long grenade launcher barrel is manufactured using cold forging. To load it, the barrel swings to the side, allowing for the use of ammunition of various lengths, including all common 40×46 mm grenades.
In addition to a two-position safety, the device features internal drop protection and an automatic trigger lock if the grenade launcher is not mounted on a rifle.
The device weighs 1.17 kg with a total length of 264 mm. All steel parts are protected by a special Steyr Mannox coating to resist corrosion and wear, and Picatinny rails on the body allow for the attachment of various sighting devices.
The grenade launcher is compatible with AR15-standard grips and adjustable stocks, simplifying ergonomic adjustments for the shooter.
