The German Federal Government has approved the supply of armored personnel carriers to the Ukrainian Army.
Militarnyi informs about it with reference to the German newspaper Welt.
This approval regards the supply of armored combat vehicles from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) warehouses, that are now located in the Czech Republic.
Christine Lambrecht, German Defense Minister, has authorized this delivery. This will cover 58 BMP-1 armored personnel carriers, which are equipped with cannon and machine guns.
These vehicles were a standard equipment for the Warsaw Pact armies.
According to the publication, the armored personnel carriers came into the possession of the German Armed Forces after reunification and were initially handed over to the Swedish army in the end of 1990s.
They were later sold to a Czech company, which is now trying to sell them over to the Ukrainian army. However, a German permit was needed for this operation.
This permission has now been given, as confirmed by a Ministry of Defense spokesman.
As reported earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in his interview with The Economist that Ukraine is in need of the armored vehicles supplies from the Western partners.
