General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has revealed the Gambit 5 UCAV.
The War Zone reported on this.
The drone was first shown at this year’s Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom.
Introduced back in March 2022, the Gambit is a family of drones developed on the basis of a single Gambit Core chassis.
Individual versions are used for various missions and may differ in airframe, wing type, propulsion system, sensor arrangement, and payload.
General Atomics has previously described four Gambit variants: the Gambit 1 intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platform and the Gambit 2 air-to-air UCAV.
In addition, there is an aircraft training and simulation platform, Gambit 3, and Gambit 4 deep reconnaissance drones.
The level of unification between drones reaches 70% due to the use of a common core.
Gambit 5 differs from its predecessors in that its design takes into account the specific operating conditions on aircraft carriers.
The specifications of the promising drone are not disclosed. It is reported that the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom is showing great interest in Gambit 5.
The company is developing a similar drone as part of the OBSS (Off-Board Sensing Station) program funded by the United States Air Force Research Laboratory.
In March, the XQ-67A drone made its first flight. The XQ-67A concept was developed as part of another US Air Force program, Low-Cost Attritable Aircraft Platform Sharing, when another similar drone, the XQ-58A, was created.
The aim of these two programs is to create relatively cheap drones with great modernization potential, that can be used to develop strike, reconnaissance, and other types of drones.
It can be assumed that General Atomics Aeronautical Systems relied on the off-the-shelf XQ-67A solutions when developing the Gambit 5.
