French startup Harmattan AI has introduced the Gobi, a high-speed interceptor drone designed to neutralize enemy drones in under a minute.
According to the company’s website, the Gobi weighs less than 2 kg, reaches speeds of up to 250 km/h, and has an operational range of 5 km.
It is designed to intercept and disable drones weighing up to 600 kg.
Instead of using an explosive warhead, the Gobi relies on kinetic impact to destroy its targets.
This design allows for faster production, reduced weight, and lower cost, making it a potentially efficient alternative to more expensive counter-UAV systems.
Harmattan AI has already secured a contract with the Ministry of Armed Forces of France to supply 1,000 AI-enabled drones for training and exercises by the end of the year. The Gobi is being evaluated as a possible addition to future procurement programs.
Currently, France relies on Mistral man-portable air defense systems to counter small aerial threats. A single Mistral missile can cost between €50,000 and €80,000, while the Gobi, according to its manufacturer, is significantly cheaper.
France is expanding its investment in unmanned systems for reconnaissance, air defense, and strike roles. As part of a broader initiative, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and other European countries are also testing the HX-2 strike drone developed by German firm Helsing.
Helsing describes the HX-2 as Europe’s response to Russia’s Lancet loitering munition, which the company considers an effective battlefield asset. Co-founder Gundbert Scherf said the HX-2 was designed for affordability and scalability, with the goal of undercutting traditional systems on both price and performance.
