France has officially started production of the M51.4 strategic nuclear ballistic missile, intended to arm its third-generation SNLE-3G submarines.

Sébastien Lecornu, France’s Minister of Defense (Prime Minister since September 9), made the announcement on September 7, 2025.

Developed by ArianeGroup, the M51.4 will feature increased range, improved accuracy, and enhanced capabilities to evade modern missile defense systems. It follows the M51.3, which has a range of over 9,000 km and can carry up to six warheads. The M51.4 program is estimated to cost €7.5 billion.

The missiles will be integrated into SNLE-3G submarines currently under construction by Naval Group. Each submarine will have 16 missile launch pods, along with updated sonar systems and AI-based data processing.

The first SNLE-3G boat is expected to enter service around 2035. The four planned units are intended to maintain continuous patrols through the end of the century.
