France will participate in joint European military exercises organized by Denmark in Greenland, amid statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump about his intention to assert control over the island.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the decision on the social media platform X.

He stated that the first French military units are already on their way to Greenland, with additional forces to be deployed later.

“At Denmark’s request, I have decided that France will take part in the joint exercises organized by Denmark in Greenland, known as Operation Arctic Endurance,” Macron shared.

Germany, Sweden, and Norway have already deployed military personnel to the island, although the number of troops involved remains limited.

As previously reported, the UK government is holding talks with European allies about the possible deployment of a military contingent to Greenland.

It was also noted that Patrick Sensburg, Head of the German Reservists’ Association, called for the deployment of a European brigade on the island.

He stated that Europe must demonstrate a serious presence in the region, given the intentions of U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the strategically important Arctic island.

The U.S. president has expressed concerns about the presence of Russian and Chinese forces in the Arctic and has described Greenland as strategically important.

Meanwhile, leaders of leading European countries issued a joint statement reaffirming the inviolability of Denmark’s sovereignty and the island’s status as its autonomous territory.

A bipartisan group of U.S. congressmen has introduced a bill aimed at prohibiting the Trump administration from spending federal funds on a U.S. invasion of the territory of NATO member states.

Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that Denmark is moving toward establishing a more permanent and expanded military presence in Greenland.
