France is prepared to assist the Persian Gulf countries that Iranian retaliatory strikes have targeted.
Speaking on Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said, according to Reuters, that any support would be provided at the request of the affected countries, delivered proportionately, and in line with the principle of collective self-defense under international law.
The Minister also commented on the recent attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran that took place on Saturday. He noted that these strikes should have been discussed in advance at the United Nations (UN).
In the French diplomat’s view, such “unilateral strikes” could gain the necessary legitimacy only through consideration by the United Nations Security Council.
Meanwhile, the official called on Tehran to halt the attacks. He stressed that the Iranian side should agree to significant concessions to reach a political solution that would bring peace to the region.
The United Kingdom, France, and Germany announced the possibility of launching strikes against Iran.
European leaders are outraged by the indiscriminate and disproportionate missile attacks carried out by Iran against countries in the region, including those that did not take part in the military operations of the United States and Israel.
On March 1, several Iranian drones struck the French naval base Camp de la Paix in Abu Dhabi.
Later, on March 2, an Iranian drone struck the British airbase RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.
Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, authorized the United States to use British military bases to destroy Iranian missile depots and launchers.
Starmer stated that the decision to allow American forces access to British facilities was made in response to a request from Washington for a specific “limited defensive purpose.”
