For the National Guard of Ukraine, the BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) has been converted to a MAN 6×6 chassis.
This was announced by the Commander of the National Guard, Oleksandr Pivnenko.
The upgrade provides for the possibility of transporting additional ammunition, which increases the combat vehicle’s autonomy.
The base chassis of the Soviet Ural truck with a gasoline engine was replaced with a modern foreign-made MAN (6×6) platform with a diesel engine.
This upgrade has ensured better mobility, cross-country capability, and reliability in difficult combat conditions.
The commander of the National Guard reported that a special technical specification had been developed for the upgrade of the National Guard’s weapons, which included a number of other improvements in addition to the chassis.
The improvements have been made to ergonomics and crew safety. The new vehicle offers more comfortable working conditions for personnel, thanks in particular to an updated cabin and optimized interior space.
The jet system has been equipped with electronic warfare systems and other solutions that will help to use this equipment more effectively in the battlefield conditions in Ukraine.
A key element of the modernization was the integration of modern fire control and guidance systems. New digital systems allow for much more accurate and rapid target detection, calculation of coordinates, and opening of fire.
The vertical and horizontal guidance systems are equipped with remote-controlled electric drives, which increase the reaction speed and accuracy of combat operations.
Thus, the BM-21 MLRS artillery unit has been integrated into a new vehicle platform with completely upgraded combat systems and now meets the requirements of the modern battlefield in the context of MLRS use.
Among other enhancements to the capabilities of the National Guard, it is worth mentioning the acquisition of self-propelled artillery systems Bogdana, Zuzana-2, and DITA.
