Five German Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role fighters will enhance Poland’s air defense capabilities.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the deployment of the aircraft the day before.
The fighter jets will support the protection of airspace on NATO’s eastern flank in the coming weeks.
“The planes will operate from the airfield of the 23rd Tactical Aviation Base in Minsk Mazowiecki. This is a practical manifestation of solidarity and cooperation between the allies. Together we ensure the security of our part of Europe,” the Minister wrote on X.
Defence24.pl reported that the German Typhoon fighter jets will be subordinated to the Polish operational command of the Armed Forces as part of the NATO Integrated Air Defense System (NATINAMDS).
The primary task of the combat aircraft will be to respond to potential threats to Polish airspace.
Similar missions to strengthen Poland’s air defense have already been carried out by other countries, including Norway, which deployed its latest F-35s in the country.
In addition, an Australian E-7A Wedgetail long-range radar detection and control aircraft arrived in Poland in late July to participate in the NATO mission.
The aircraft was accompanied by about 100 Australian military personnel who would provide support to the mission.
This is the first operation of a specialized aircraft of this type to be performed directly from the territory of Poland.
The plans to deploy the E-7A Wedgetail to Poland were announced in late June. In addition to its tasks within the North Atlantic Alliance, the aircraft will also provide intelligence to Ukraine.
Presumably, this will include detection, tracking, and targeting during massive Russian missile and drone attacks to enhance the effectiveness of Ukrainian air defense.
