The first Canadian Leopard 2A4 main battle tank, which is intended for transfer to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has arrived in Poland.
Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand announced this on Twitter.
She also published a photo featuring the tank being unloaded from a C-17 military transport aircraft.
The Ukrainian military will soon begin training on this combat equipment.
“The first Canadian Leopard 2 main battle tank that we’ve donated to Ukraine has now arrived in Poland.
Alongside our allies, we’ll soon be training the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the use of this equipment,” Anita Anand wrote.
Canada is to transfer four Leopard 2 main battle tanks from its Armed Forces to Ukraine.
Explaining the decision to transfer only four tanks, Anand noted that Canada has 82 Leopard 2 tanks in service.
Ottawa is providing Kyiv with spare parts and ammunition for the tanks.
As previously reported, on February 4, the Minister of National Defence announced that the Leopard 2A4 tank was loaded into a C-17 military transport aircraft that had departed from Halifax to Europe. In addition, instructors will come to Europe from Canada to train Ukrainian tank crews.
The implementation of plans for the transfer of tanks began after Germany abandoned concerns about the supply of Leopard 2 to Ukraine and agreed to re-export these tanks from other countries.
NATO countries coordinate actions among themselves, determining the specific number of tanks that each country can provide.
