The Finnish company Patria has presented a prototype of the ARVE wheeled self-propelled artillery system.
It is reported by Calibre Defense.
The novelty, presented at the Patria Arctic Event, combines an all-terrain truck SISU E13TP (8×8) and a towed howitzer 155 GH 52 (155 K 98). Patria, after a series of mergers and acquisitions, is the owner of the defense division of Tampella.
This company is the developer of two 155-mm howitzers that are currently used in large numbers by the Finnish army: 155 K 83 and 155 K 98.
The main goal of the program is to quickly create an affordable solution, so no structural changes are planned for the artillery unit at the initial stage.
Upon arrival at the firing position, the vehicle is lowered to the level of the towed version, maintaining the usual protocols of the crew.
This makes it possible to use the vehicle without the need for additional training for military personnel and reservists who are already familiar with the 155 GH 52.
The SISU E13TP truck is also in service with the Finnish Defense Forces, so there will be no problems with maintenance.
The ARVE’s technical characteristics correspond to the capabilities of the towed gun: the unit is capable of firing 3 shots in the first 15 seconds with a maximum range of up to 40 km.
The gun is loaded and unloaded manually. The first shot can be fired within 90 seconds of reaching the position, and the gunner can leave 45 seconds after the last shot. The ammunition load includes 24 shells.
Since the 155 GH 52 and 155 K 83 share a common design basis, the ARVE can be equipped with both versions of the guns.
Patria also notes that the system can be equipped with a loading machine if necessary.
It is worth reminding that the project was announced in April 2024.
