Finland plans to purchase CV90 infantry fighting vehicles as part of a joint procurement with Sweden, Norway, and Lithuania.
The Helsingin Sanomat media reported on this.
The signing of the relevant agreement for the procurement of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles is expected in the second half of spring 2025.
According to Swedish Defense Minister Ulf Kristersson, the joint procurement plan covers over a hundred infantry fighting vehicles and will provide significant advantages through the implementation of the joint initiative.
He emphasized that joint procurement helps accelerate deliveries, reduce costs, and benefits the defense industry by supporting production capacities.
Currently, Finland already uses CV90 infantry fighting vehicles in the configuration with a 30mm Bushmaster 2 cannon, alongside Soviet-era BMP-2MDs, whose service life is nearing its end.
In addition to the 102 CV9030 vehicles, Finland may order another 100–120 units, which will not only replace the Soviet-era BMP-2s but also potentially strengthen the army with additional equipment.
It is worth noting that the cost of this procurement is currently unknown. As Kristersson mentioned, the countries plan to order several hundred vehicles, and their price is quite substantial.
“We are discussing at least several hundred vehicles, and they are quite expensive. On the other hand, we are increasing our defense budget,” Ulf Kristersson, the Minister of Defense of Sweden, announced.
It should be noted that CV90 infantry fighting vehicles are becoming increasingly common in Europe, and by 2030, they could become the most widely used vehicles of this type in the armed forces of European countries.
In addition to the joint procurement by Finland, Sweden, and Lithuania, CV90s will also be supplied to countries such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia. They will further supplement the existing vehicles in the armed forces of Ukraine, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Militarnyi previously reported that the governments of the Netherlands and Sweden reached an agreement on the production of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles in the Netherlands. This process will involve a large number of local companies, which will significantly increase production volumes in response to growing demand.
