The Finnish Defence Forces have signed an agreement with the company ICEYE for the procurement of reconnaissance radar satellites.
The Finnish Ministry of Defence announced this.
The new synthetic aperture remote sensing satellites will enhance Finland’s reconnaissance capabilities.
The agreement was signed based on a letter of intent concluded between the Ministry of Defence and ICEYE in June of this year.
The contract includes satellites and related technical equipment and systems that will enable the development of independent space-based surveillance capabilities for the Finnish Defence Forces.
It is noted that ICEYE satellites are capable of detecting and monitoring targets in all weather conditions and lighting. Other government authorities can also use the information obtained by the satellites.
The total cost of the acquisition is approximately €158 million. The agreement also includes options to extend the satellites’ lifecycle and expand the system.
