Lockheed Martin upgraded Sniper targeting pods for data sharing and has already conducted the first flight demonstration of the Sniper NTP networked targeting pod, confirming real-time target data sharing between multiple aircraft.
The tests took place on January 30, 2026, and involved two F-16 fighter jets equipped with upgraded Sniper containers, according to Lockheed Martin.
During the flight, two-way transfer of target data between air platforms was confirmed, with simultaneous transmission of information to a ground control station.
This allows for the creation of a shared and constantly updated tactical picture for air and ground units and reduces the ‘detection-kill’ cycle to a matter of seconds.
A key feature of the Sniper NTP is its support for network interaction between platforms without the need to modify the aircraft themselves.
Information is exchanged via mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) and secure data channels, ensuring communication stability even in the event of temporary interruptions.
The Sniper NTP allows pilots, ground and naval teams to simultaneously work with a single set of up-to-date intelligence data in real time.
The system enables parallel execution of reconnaissance, surveillance, and targeting tasks, rather than sequential execution, which is critical for modern multi-domain operations.
The module is based on the combat-proven Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod, one of the most widely used EO/IR targeting pods in the world.
In its new configuration, it effectively transforms from a standalone sensor into a full-fledged network node of a combat system.
Lockheed Martin notes that the successful demonstration is an important milestone in the development of networked targeting and meets the requirements of future conflicts, where speed, communication, and accuracy are crucial.
As a reminder, Lockheed Martin’s successor to the Stinger recently passed the first stage of combat testing.
